In a reversal, Barack Obama is proposing tapping the United States' strategic oil reserves to help drive down gasoline prices, his campaign said Monday.
Now another shift? I rmember first it was all troops out of Iraq, Now it is combat troops which would be needed to protect non combat armed forces there if we left any forces over there. (we have to and he knows darn well we do).. Then it was give Fla. and Mich. 1/2 votes, all of the sudded now it is full votes? Then do not open reserves as we have them to guarantee no shortages to emergency services and no sense to falsely control prices by releasing oil into our economy only to have to raise them up again when we restock the reserves... Now open them up? I suppose when he is elected he then explain why we cannot afford the elaborate health care scheme he has devised. He knows like any sane person would, we cannot pull that off, but by then we will so used to his reversals, we will expect it wont we?
I find the most revolting was Obama's insistence we bring all our troops home and stop military spending. Now, faced with some advisors and a little more reality he is saying he will "try" to redeploy (not bring home you anti-war folks) our troops to Afghanistan where we will ratchet up the war there by multiples and he certainly has set no deadline for getting out of Afghanistan.
Afghanistan has no oil so his sheeple can't just repeat no more blood for oil so he will see to it that their blood is spilled for nothing in a nothing country that bled the former USSR for years and brought that mighty once super power to its knees.
Talk about another Viet Nam! Afghanistan has Viet Nam written all over it.
Doesn't the Federal Government make more on a barrel of oil than the oil companies?
The federal government makes 45% on every barrel pumped out of the ground. Exxonmobil's profit so far this year is 8.5%. You decide. Google Exxonmobil corporation & taxes per barrel crude oil
I believe that was supposed to be to build roads and improve infrastructure. Anyone know if any of the money is going for that intended purpose?
Is that just tax or does that include royalties on public land?
Before any of our taxed dollars goes anywhere it is used to pay a lot of bureaucrats. They are as powerful as any party or lobby group. If we ever regain control and/or bring about change, it will be when we can control THEM!
You know, the fact is the federal government makes more money on almost every product or service that the company that produces it, and don't forget, Obama says we need to raise taxes.
Am I the only person who is sick of both the democrats and republicans in congress?
The democrats want to use alternative energy--wind, solar, biofuel, etc. All of these are years away from really giving us any relief.
The republicans want to drill and increase our domestic oil supply. This, also , is years away from bringing us any relief.
Each side is violently opposed to the ideas of the other.
Why don't they come in from recess, sit down at their little desks, get out their crayons, and realize that they can agree to do it all? Is this so hard? Oh, wait, what was I thinking. They would actually have to work together for the good of the American people and not just apeal to their voter bases. My mistake!!!
There's a problem with what you're saying and it's similar to the mistake of moral equivalence.
Democrats think wind and solar is the answer for OIL.
Republicans think OIL is the answer for OIL.
Wind, solar, biofuels, and even the nuclear Democrats oppose? Will NEVER power a 747 for example! And it will take at least half a century, perhaps a century, to convert the entire energy profile of our automobiles to electrical. That's convincing all automakers to make electric. Convincing all consumers to buy electric. Tearing down our gas stations and rebuilding, and convincing Shell Oil to go out of business. etc etc etc
The most direct way to solve any OIL issues we have is to be a bigger OIL producer. The first step to get there? DRILL MORE and research more. And in the meantime research the currently unviable clean energies for the far FAR future.
I'm not entirely I made a mistake. I said, DO IT ALL. Different solutions will work in different areas. Aren't we saying the same thing?
Yes. We are.
c anderson--
A couple of things: The Democrats do want the alternative sources but those always listed have had millions and millions spent on them and there are limits to physics and chemistry. Fuel cells for example (I've worked with a fuel cell company on a joint project a few years ago) have pretty much maxed out their potential and they still can't put power on the grid competetively with hydro electricity nor run cars competitively with the good old combustion engine. It isn't a matter of years for many of these technologies. They just are inherently flawed by comparison with the combustion engine. By the way, there was plenty of money and time expended on the fuel cells at AVISTA in Spokane Washington and with the backing of Bill Gates of Microsoft yet!
The Republicans want to drill which you see as having problems. Let me dispell your concerns at two levels:
1) It will NOT take 10 years to get oil flowing in all the areas onshore. For example, I am working with a group in Michigan drilling a third well (two functioning well) in Michigan's reef area. This is a shallow drilling operation and they expect the drilling to start and finish inside one month. It will take a little longer to get to market, but not that much. Only very deepwater offshore drilling would take anything like 5 or 6 years--ten for a very big, very deep project with lots of payoff.
2) Even if it were to take years, we should start now. If Clinton hadn't vetoed the energy bill 8 years ago we would already have this precious oil flowing into our country to fulfill our needs.
marie
No argument from me. You're right.
Still, it wouldn't hurt to use all alternatives.
Marie,
Well said.
Oil is the cheapest most abundant and practicable energy source on the planet. And there are REASONS why everyone on the planet uses it as the energy of choice for vehicles. It boils down to economics, efficiency and bang for the buck.
The democratic notion that alternate clean energies will lower oil prices before oil production can? Is absurdly wrong. Like being a century off wrong.
There was a bill that was blocked by the democratic leadership in the Senate that was referred to as "the All the Above Bill!" It included all those items you mentioned. It was a good logical approach to our energy needs, short term and long term.
Out west they pump water into reservoirs above the generators during off peak hours. And when they need extra power they release the water back through the generators. Gravity the ultimate reusable energy source.
I have seen him so many times point his finger at John McCain and complain about his reversing his stands. I have felt like any of us, if you become more knowledgable on an issue with time and find your view was not sound. Change it for the good of all. The only difference I see and I guess this is what causes me so much pause with him, is he is never wrong. I woould like him to once instead of saying we should not have used the surge in Iraq to.. "ya know it is the first sensible thing the current Administration has done and hopefully will shorten the war. Ofcourse say I was wrong. (he would probably follow up with April fools)! Too concieted for my vote.
There is a difference between changing your mind due to shifting realities and figuring out a better way to do things, as opposed to changing your mind to pander for votes on HUGE defining issues.
Obama has shifted on his defining issue - Iraq. And it's a WHOPPING SHIFT on a WHOPPING SUBJECT!
That's why he's called a flip-flopper and that's why it sticks!
Now he's flipped on another WHOPPING SUBJECT that his base is particularly sensitive to. DRILLING.
McCain has done no such thing - shift on a huge defining issue. That's why flip flopping hasn't stuck. If one day McCain shifted to unconditional withdrawal from Iraq? YOU would be correct in saying he's a flip-flopper. McCain won't though. Because he's not a flip flopper! He's been around long enough to have researched and have thoughts about these things.
Get it?
Senator Obama is once again pandering for votes. His energy plan is the following:
"The solution to mitigating gas price shocks, therefore, is further distancing the nation from OPEC pricing and making a long-term transition to alternative energy sources and improved conservation or development of oil and natural gas substitutes. Without this approach, oil and gas drilling will only postpone what will be a major crisis -- far worse than current conditions.
In the short term, however, I have worked to address the unchecked speculation that is occurring in our energy markets and contributing to the fuel price volatility experienced by motorists. On June 12, 2008, I joined my colleague Senator Dick Durbin in introducing S. 3130, a bill to increase transparency in the oil futures markets by providing greater resources to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to detect and punish price manipulation and excessive speculation. This bill also moves the CFTC inspector general out of the CFTC Chairman's office, and stops speculators from escaping U.S. regulations by manipulating the use of foreign markets."
This is his direct quote from July 15, 2008 in reply to my request that he support off shore drilling as well as exploration in the shale fields and Anwar. Also that he support nuclear, wind, solar, and coal gasification. The Senator doesn't support any of the above energy means. I don't think he has changed his stance that much from this. Just how does he think we will be able to heat/cool our homes and businesses? Small efficient cars are fine for two or three people. How about the family that has 5 or 6 or more. They need the larger vehicle. Who will help them? How about the poor? They can't go out and buy small and new. What are they to do? If this was the French Revolution his reply might be "let them eat cake"
Of course Obama changed his stance on oil reserves. He has no clue on how to lead this country! It's a new day and depending on which way the wind blows, he changes directions with it. The republicans have been wanting to drill offshore and arctic areas for YEARS and the democrats have always blocked it. Now that we have $4 gasoline, suddenly the dems become concerned about oil reserves. They can't have it both ways and Obama can't keep going back and forth or he'll make himself dizzy. Scary if he becomes president! God help us.
Wow, he changed his mind when he saw the public wanted it....sound fimiliar....change my but.
It seems that BO is slowly coming around to a more realistic view of what we are confronting. I like McCain's energy plan better but, since BO is probably going to be our next Pres., it's important to understand a few things. Firstly, though a strategic reserve of 702 million barrels sounds like a lot, the world consumes 85 million bpd, so it represents a 8 day supply for the world and less than a month's supply for just the US. So, even if they were to release thee entire strategic oil reserve, it's only going to help for a few weeks. Then we're back to paying $4, $5 maybe $20 a gallon at the pump. Second, despite what Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi and the other Dems tell you, you can't conserve back to energy independence. I, as much as anyone, want to get off the carbon fuel bandwagon. But, even if we approach it like the Manhattan Project, it will take 20-30 years to get enough solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, hydrogen fuel cell, electric auto, tidal energy, etc. on line so that we can exist without importing oil. So, to bridge the gap, we need hydrocarbons. Our best bets are offshore drilling and oil shale/coal conversion to oil. I would treat this like a matter of national security and nationalize the energy industry and re-patriate our national resources.
You are correct, plus is everyone ready to go spend $40,000 for a new car that runs on Electric or are you going to keep the car you have for a few years. No one I know can just through out the car they have and buy a new one. Or spend the $15,000 for solar power, or have the room or the $100,000 for windpower.
India has developed a car that runs on compressed air. Actuallya US company is starting production here in late 09.
Given the amount of AIR coming out of the Obama Campaign , meybe we can power cars on that. We could be a major EXPORTER!!!
No McGovern----
Do you know the name of the name of the company making the compressed air car?
With this election, we could harness all the hot air out of both of our candidates and send them both to India.
Tata Motors in India, US manufacturer is zero pollution motors
http://zeropollutionmotors.us/?page_id=36
Its a little bigger than the smart car it comes in 2,4,6 seater version platforms.
With all the obligatory US regulations it cost about 3 tiimes what it will cost over there.
Is it really a surprise that he has changed his mind again or should I say saying what we want to hear. A total SNAKE OIL SALESMAN
Obama is a rookie at spinning and waffling. He needs lessons from Loser Kerry and Whiner Gore. Next thing BO will want to do is have me give back 30% of the gas I buy and pay for so he can give it to someone else and then claim we are reducing our dependence on foreign gas by helping one another. This man is an arrogant inexperienced politician made in the mold of Washington DC insiders. His speaking ability is polished and he is quite charismatic but utterly repulsive when it comes to making intelligent sense of solving this problem. Tell the Washington/Hollywood/ German/French superstar to spin faster and maybe he will catch up with himself on the next rotation. Here are some suggestions for him to help us use less gasoline/petroleum: 1. Ground his gas guzzling plane; 2. Use a renewable source of energy (his legs) and walk everywhere; 3. Turn his heat and air-conditioning off and live in a cave with an open fire for his wife to cook over. (Oops! I made a mistake - energy is consumed when it is used - there is no such thing as a "renewable" source. It may have to be created by more wind or more sun but the energy will still be used. When BO uses the term " renewable" source it is just more spin and stupidity. I close with my cliche of the month - "Just say no to BO"

Deoderant and cologne help with BO.
LOL, I agree with the OP - love the BO initials... If BO *giggle* wants 'change we all can believe in' - then why on earth is he following others lead instead of his own. How is adapting OTHER candidate's views from the OTHER (I guess NON CHANGING) party change? It's more like Simon says, don't you think? And he is way too pressed over what the rest of the world thinks of him. Just remember, the rest of the world doesn't LIKE US!!! They think we are greedy, decadent, blah blah blah... *Basically we're free, they're not. That must make zem french guys greedy, oui?
Very well said!!!
Is there any further question as to if Obama is a politician or not? If you want to know what he thinks, it seems you only need to look at public sentiment. If that changes, it appears Obama's positon will as well. Can we please, during the next 4 years come up with an individual who stands for something other than simply getting elected!
For those Obama supporters who are dissapointed with Sir Barack of Obama's decison to support the Tapping of the oil reserves, take heart, he will have a different position on this next week.
OBama just flipped flipped again about 6 oclock
Every person in Congress will flip, flop, & break dance for the vote. This is nothing new so why does everyone act like they are appalled? We will hope and Wait for the real leader to emerge and help us out of this mess.
We can only help ourselves, but don't forget we put the (ID 10 t's) in Office.
You new what he meant, so what is the problem, a type "O" Mr. Perfectionist.
The question that I would ask everyone is "Where would/could we be if we had spent 1 billion dollars here at home instead of handing it over to Haliburton and Dick Cheney"?
We need to change all of our habits as it relates to the use of fossil fuels. It will take all sorts of innovative ways to curb usage. It includes, carpooling, auto maintenance, mass transit, alternate means of transportation like bikes, scooters, walking, vacations closer to home, tent camping versus, pulling a trailer. All of those things.
jamesB - you missed the point. You are free to spend your money however you want and go wherever you want. The point is how much will it cost you. We are all concerned about reducing our dependence on foreign oil ... or are you actually an ARAB SPY who seeks to destroy American by maintaining it's dependence on foreign oil????
It is funny McCain group calling Obama flip flopper when McCain did so many times... I really hate the word "flip flop" - why be penalized if one realizes there is a "better way"? People who don't flip flop if there is a better way are idiots. If you get lost are you going to keep driving hoping to get to the destination or be smart and check map/turn around?
Also, it is sad the republicans are complaining about the inactivities of democrats on drilling and how people are suffering - either they are idiots or they believe we are - what the heck will the vote do for immediate relief? It is same old republican crap hoping people are dumb enough to fall for the trap
The problem is BO is not looking for a better way he is using what is popular at the time even if it won't work. That is Flip Flopping, not just changing your oppinion.
shasetai
You need to realize that none of the democrats ideas will bring instant relief either. All of their ideas will also take years to bring any help. So, they need to all get together and embrace ALL solutions. Why is that so hard?
i understand that. I am just saying the republicans are hitting the democrats for the recess and making it sound like if the bill were to pass few days earlier it will bring immediate relief. I know both sides are all talk but in this instance the republicans are talking a lot more.
@We are a Republic
You think McCain isn't doing it? Yes Obama is "flip flopping" because a lot of people somehow thinks McCain's "flip flop" into drilling will grant immediate relief! Well Obama has to go with the flow if the majority of the people are dumb enough to think McCain is right. Sad but true.
I didn't hear any of Republican say passing a bill would bring immediate relief. I heard them say, "We owe it to the American people to come to any agreement and do something." I don't have a problem with that. Maybe that's "all talk." Saying "we need to do something" and then going on a 5 week vacation isn't "all talk?" Why can't people give up the party crap and see that they're all the same?
Obama has to "go with the flow" and that's alright with you? You think that he should abandon his principles for votes? I hope I misunderstood you.
The problem is BO is not looking for a better way he is using what is popular at the time even if it won't work. That is Flip Flopping, not just changing your oppinion.
Ahhhh good ol' republican projection.... McCain is the KING of flip floppers. Obama thinks about possible solutions. McCain changes his mind , not because he was thinking of solutions, but because he's trying to appeal to all.
That's why on Mar 16, 2007 McCain said... "
I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception"
I love that!!! --what a ridiculous little curmudgeon McCain is...trying to appeal to all HE doesn't even KNOW what he stands for...
The new Republican slogan ...
A vote for McCain is a vote for what ever Brian says .
LOL!!!
OOh... and McCain hardly knew anything about the economy until it became an election issue and now he is suddenly well versed. ...and you call dems sheep LOLOLOL! Repubs are the sheep who follow the sheep drinking the kool-aid!
@c anderson
Actually a video from msnbc had a republican saying that we owe it to the americans but she also talked about how people are suffering now and how their action will suddenly make it better which is so not true.
On Obama "flip flopping" - he gave reason why and whether people buy it or not is up to them. And in this political campaign with so much negativity from both sides (mostly mcCain...) Obama is basically screwed either way. If he continues to oppose drilling McCain can continue to enjoy putting negative ads and possibly win the election by negativity - something we don't want to happen. Obama decided to switch a bit to combat McCain and gave reasons to why he is doing it. Right now McCain's platform is negativity on Obama while Obama is fighting back and try to deal with real issues. What happened to the "Maverick"?
shaselai
Apparently, you are more intereted in political party lines than you are in the welfare of the country. God protect us from Party Lovers on both sides. Unfortunately, we all have to live and suffer with what they decide.
i am interested in the welfare of the country. And the topic is about selecting the next president who will help us - mccain has been in office for 26 years and we need new blood - it is a risk that we should take.
shaselai
That's my point exactly. I don't want to take "risks" with the welfare of this country. You may have the desire to "take risks" with your life. I don't want you taking "risks" with mine.
but what has mccain brought in his 26 years in senate? He is going to be shortsighted and give the people immediate relief but the future wont be so bright for next generations. I certainly don't want to be part of the generation that destroys the next.
Wait... people here actually bought that calculated Republican grandstanding?! They stuck around for what, five hours? And invited the public in to watch (normally not allowed)?
shaslai
Where have you seen me singing the praises of McCain? It never happened. Unfortunately, we are in another lose/lose situation just like in 2004.
I will never understand how pointing out McCain's weaknesses (and vice versa) makes Obama's weakness less.
How will McCain destroy the next generation. How will Obama save the next generation. Both ideas are pure fantasy.
True, McCain hasn't done much in the last 26 years. Obama has done even less. It makes no difference.
You are the person who referred to Obama's election as a "risk," not me.
c anderson - if you were actually concerned about your county, you would be doing whatever you can to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. As T. Boone Pickens said, WE CAN NOT DRILL OUR WAY OUT OF THIS PROBLEM. So, I guess you are just an America-hater.
B from D
That was just plain stupid. Read my posts. I have said we need to use all methods for energy. The dems have good ideas. The repubs have good ideas. If they could stop bickering along party lines, something might actually get done. And, still, none of it will come quickly.
How do you want me to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Should I buy an oil rig and drill in my backyard? Will you finance that for me? Or should I urge our government to stop acting like 4th graders and get to work?
Calling anyone an America-hater because they don't follow your party politics is really adult.
C A - Okay, going back on this string, I see that you are not taking a strong stance on one side (repub) versus another. I was rushing through the hundreds of idiotic posts and lumped you in with the rest. See my posting at 5.10. I hope that gives you some assurance that I am not always just into name calling. My apologies.
apology appreciated and accepted.
FACT: Tapping the strategic oil reserves will lower the price of oil 3-4 cents for two weeks!
FACT: It will cost us more money to replenish those reserves
FACT: Who pays for it? WE DO!
Suddenly John McCains Federal Tax holiday on gas makes al lot more sense! Cost us nothing, we arent selling anything off and it can last for more than TWO WEEKS!
Obama stated McCains tax holiday was a "gimmick for votes"
What would any sane person call this but the same thing?
If we go out and use our Stategic Supply then we wouldn't have anything if Arab Countries decided to cut off supplies, if we have the reserves we at least have a couple weeks to work on the issue.
Hey dipstick, we do not get our oil from the Middle East. We get a majority of it from Canada.
Crude oil importers to USA May 2008 Thousand barrels per day
Canada 1,840 - Has been number one for years
Saudi Arabia 1,579
Mexico 1,116
Venezuela 1,030
Nigeria 851
Iraq 583 - increasing in quantity supplied
see YAHOO - USA crude oil importers
Opening up more leases off-shore isn't pumping from our strategic reserves. That is a supply that is being contained in large salt domes in Texas and Louisiana. If I am wrong, please correct me.
And in reference to these candidates, I do not like either of them. I respect McCain's service to our country. I fear Obama, and what his elitist policies would do to my country. I will vote for the lessor of two evils(McCain) and hope that some day we will again develop real leaders that are willing to take on the challenge of running for this office.
The only thing that is guaranteed with McCain as President is that he will fill his Depends 3 times a day.
ok, it's clear - you hate older people.
Unlike Obama, who talks crap, at least at the waste material is coming out the correct end of McCain's GI Track.
Yes, apparently all republicans have bladder and bowel control issues and democrats are apparently running marathons.
Apparently because you're old - you become devoid of any intelligence. Or is that you're only sparring tool, tiger?
McCain is old... HA HA HA... Laugh it up really good. Because the realities of Obama are going to hit sooner or later. Vote anyone but that egotistical jerk. He and Kanye West are going to duke it out over who gets to be 'Black Jesus'. Meanwhile the rest of us will pray to the real Jesus that Obama doesn't get elected.
Apparently because you're old - you become devoid of any intelligence. Or is that you're only sparring tool, tiger?
That explains it !!!! Aall of Obamas advisors are from the Clinton administrationand well in the their 60 and 70's!
Don't see any 20 somethings in any senior or advisory positions in the Obama campaign, for that matter had a hard time finding anyone with a bio that was in his 30's
Obama is just a front man for the same old politics sorry to say!.
.
OBAMA 08 "The Smoke and Mirrors TOUR!" pandering for votes near you soon!
Red Hawk, that is a very immature remark. Are you above the age of 12?
Maybe if either of these "candidates" had any new or brilliant ideas, we wouldn't be so down on them. The problem is that both of them politicize everything. One guys knows foreign policy, but not much of anything else. The other guy is great to listen to, but I am not sure if he can get anything done. I prefer someone that can make something happen and not just talk about it. I have worked for too many people who talk a good game, but when it comes down to it, they are ineffective.
Now all we have to do is find that someone...
More BS from BO.
Pelosi and Obama are the biggest hypocrites going on "putting some of the oil reserves on the market to reduce the price of gas." This act would make them no different from the "gouging oil companies" that they rail on about because this would be getting a HUGE WINDFALL PROFIT for the (democratic) government on the difference between what was paid for the oil when it was put into the reserve and what they would be selling it on the open market for ....say an $80 a barrel difference on the 70 million gallons they are proposing selling ...that 56 billion in quick revenue for congress and help to avoid tax increases and give the democrats a pile of money to spend. For 56 billion you bet Obama will flip-flop and you can bet that Pelosi has an eye for the quick buck while fooling people just like she alleges those terrible oil companies have and do. Pelosi and Ombama have a quick "on-shore drilling" program to make some quick bucks and political profit. But it is this kind of fundamental disrespect for the average taxpayer and citizen (and thinking they are stupid) that converted me from a radical democratic to a thinking independent; God do we need some real politicians and candidates.
Amen brother!
The USA uses 20.7 MILLION barrels of oil EVERY DAY! A 70 million barrel draw down of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is equal to only 3 days usage! And that is going to affect prices how? Is this as big a gimmick as the "gas tax holiday" (or bigger)? What about the Senator's concern for "long term solutions"? The Saudis could render this meaningless just by cutting less than half the increased production that Pres. Bush finally wrangled from them. Totally asinine!
Then again, you may remember that Pres. Clinton pulled just this same stunt shortly before the 2000 elections in an attempt to "disguise" the rise in gas prices which was occurring under his regime. So much for "the new politics". Same old sh... stuff.
However, it DOES say something about the difference between Republicans and Democrats. Republicans propose to produce more. Democrats propose to spend what we've already accumulated.
I might have hoped for better out of Sen. Obama, but, with no other solutions to offer, I guess this is the best he could do. Sad.
I agree, James. As a speechifier, he is without equal, but when it comes to answering extemporaneously, he's at a loss until he can wander his way back to some meaningless mantra (Pull out immediately, pull out a brigade a month, pull out in a year, in 16 months, as the situation allows, etc. until he can get to "we'll be as careful getting out as we were careless getting in", which means what, precisely?). Ditto when it comes to policy. He criticizes McCain's policy on energy and his is...? Well, we'll tax windfall profits to pay for gas for poor people (of course, the oil companies will jack prices to reflect those taxes, so poor folk might get a break but the rest of us get screwed by even higher prices, the government creates a new bureaucracy, and not a drop more oil gets produced). I listen to Obama's speeches and, like many others, I want to believe, but the substance is utterly lacking. This guy isn't even a lightweight. He's a non-weight, but the MSM and a bunch of gullible people are gonna elect him. Hope they enjoy the results.
All of this is just campaigning, in the end, no person is going to fix all the problems the US has at this time. The candidates just hope that one or another of their campaign tactics is going to pull votes. But, that does not even matter because this is not a popular vote. No one person can change all these issues in 4 years. It takes longer to dig out of a hole then it takes to get into it.
