In a reversal, Barack Obama is proposing tapping the United States' strategic oil reserves to help drive down gasoline prices, his campaign said Monday.

Red Hawk:

Your comment is disgusting. Comments like these not only are ignorant but totally disrespectful.

As far as Obama, he is just a piece of work. Wasn't it just last week he said that if we just inflate our
tire and get regular tune ups, we did not need to drill. Every time this man is challenged he changes his mind. I know, you will say that John McCain changed his mind. Yes, thank God, after gasoline went to $4.00 a gallon with no end in site. Obama said that $4.00 was not high enough, it just went up too fast. This man is against everything that will make us less dependent on oil from the Middle East.
He just wants to tax the oil companies that provide thousands of jobs and pay millions in taxes already.
Let's tax them more so the prices go higher and they lay off more people.

Can you say "change"? This guy is a salesman at best. And his coolaid drinking constituency is his market. Yeah, he's going to tell you what ever he can while he tries to keep his foot in as many profitable centers as possible (consider votes as bucks).

He's sort of the circus tightrope act that doubles as a miracle hair cure salesman. Or perhaps he is more of the crystal ball guru that tells everyone of his customers that he sees and says exactly what they want to hear. This is very effective until you have someone outside getting all of the customers together to see how the guru answered. Can you say "con"?

Obama will play every card possible just to get as many isolated groups on his side. The problem is that he is starting to wobble because he is juggling the special interests while trying to walk that tightrope.

I asked an Obama worker at a booth yesterday to give me two reasons to vote for Obama. His definitive answers? He's a nice guy, and he's got a website. He also added that "Obama's got a great spirit". I asked "did you meet him"? and his reply was "no". This went on for about ten minutes, and then it took a teenage girl to say pre-canned things like "we can't have a third term Bush", etc. My reply to both of them is that we won't with either of the candidate, but with Obama, we know we can count on change, because he's always changing.

In short, even his workers can't identify exactly what he stands for. But, they are more than willing to hurl insults and curses for anyone that opposes Obama. Isn't that ironic? The so-called party of peace and freedom attacks with aggression and verbal hostility when people don't agree with them? Funny, I can't recall ever seeing this from the Republican and Independent constituency. The so-called party of freedom and peace deeply desire to censor and forever revoke the peace and freedoms of their opposition. Isn't that simply beautiful in it's hypocrisy? It's nearly poetic.

Obama and every democrat needs to allow (yes, that's right ... in the land of freedom, we need to say "allow") the vote to go forward on the drilling OF OUR OWN RESOURCES! Just like every other country in the world does for their own sake.

I do offer this advice to the democrats who hate oil. Go through your house, car and all other possessions and remove everything made of plastic, and make sure that you engine has no oil. There is even oil in your printer and hinges - be sure to dispose of these. Also, make sure that you do not buy anything that is contained in plastic, or use your credit card (made out of oil). Also be sure that you do not buy any gas of any kind. And while you are at it, be sure not to breathe out, for you are then contributing to the carbon dioxide as you exhale. Also be sure to tell your fascist leaders that you don't want the public to be allowed to gather in protests, concerts and fairs, for that creates concentrated releases of high concentrations of carbon dioxide (which will be very difficult, for you can only breathe in).

Aren't you democrats tired of the propaganda? You are told you cannot listen to anyone that doesn't agree with your side, and that if you aren't for the party (a communistic steering wheel). I have a question for you. How will you ever know if your side is misleading you if you will never listen to any opposition? That is effective propaganda - just like any other communist nation utilizes; to make you feel guilty for questioning your leaders and their actions.

Chicken Little told you the sky is falling, and there are people telling you that it's not. Why do you believe Chicken Little and not the others? Because the party said so - to question the party is to be against the party, right? Feeling a little controlled? You should be. You are volunteering for chains of government because they tell you that you are not free, and that having them control your life and world is freedom.

So far I have heard the following reasons for voting Obama, from 20 somethings my age. 1. He's Hot. (Then date him, don't elect him!)
2. He's going to change America. (yes, it's commie time!)
3. He's going to clean up Bush's Mess (huge eyeroll)
4. He's going to give us our money back. (No, he's going to give you other people's money for being an underachiever.)
5. He stands for something. (Yes, I guess Bush never stood for the war in iraq, the economy, or the war on terror. He sat for those.)

Libs prey on 20-somethings for the same reason the military preys on 18 year olds.

They're young and impressionable.

As well, libs race-bait and prey on lower educated Africans and Latinos.

How's that for a strategy!

Not exactly an appeal to intellect.

Unlike the democrats of yore, today's democrats have a corner on the young, naive, the uneducated and the dummies. As well as weird fringe groups. Which is their base.

Yes you're right, George stood for the war in Iraq, the economy and the war on terror. Seeing as how all of those are going so well, what will he stand for next - oh that's right, drilling off my Florida coast, can't wait to see how that turns out. Are you nuts?

I fell for the Republican mantra of small governement, pro business and fiscal responsibility when I was 18, I'm still here where the hell are they? We've gotten bigger government, pro BIG business only (Halliburton, not my small business) and fiscal lunacy -lower taxes / spend more.

    Well they already drill of my Texas coast and we refine it here too. Funny the ONE state where you can say the entire state is doing pretty good despite recession??? You got it. Texas... If the country ran more like texas, maybe floridians wouldn't have a foreclosure crisis.

    If Texas were a country it would be ranked 15th in the world for GDP.

    If Florida were a country it would be third world.

          dvs405, I have lived through, several cycles of democrats and republicans. As a matter of fact in my immature days, I was a foaming at the mouth democrat. But as time and events pasted, I saw and learned that when the republicans are in office, my taxes are lower, I take home more of my wages. When the democrats take over, I pay much more in taxes. And economically I am a lower-middle class wage earner.

          Gene-340754The foriegn auto plants building autos in the U.S. are located where the states don't have closed shop laws. They don't worry about strikes or the benefits of employees. Good ole foriegn no how, no how to turn a dollar while killing the domestic companies. If the auto companies of Europe and Asia can be aided by their governments why can't you see the need for our government to keep American companies American owned and operated. Our Congress gives tax breaks to foriegn companies who drive down prices to the point the U.S. companies can't compete. We buy more world goods than any Nation because they don't allow our products in, so we keep making the Asians and Europeons rich. I believe there is global warming, but I have come to believe that no matter what we do to conserve energy and fight pollution, it will cost us too much while the world keeps polluting. Congress hasn't allowed a new refinery in years, even if we do produce more oil where will we turn it into usable fuel. For those who say we need to eliminate oil, you don't seem to realize that petrolium products are a part of almost everthing we use.

          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
          yeah and petroleum products - plastics, etc. are also one of the biggest pollutents. by the way, where is all the oil going that we currently pump??? why aren't the oil companies exploring the millions of acres they currently lease??? even if we did drill, it will be 10 years or more before we'd ever see any of that oil.
              Does anyone out there realize what the oil and gas companies have been doing to us (the American Public) since forever. Every time gas prices go up. First they go way up then they drop down a little then they go up again then they see saw back and forth for awhile till they finally settle in at twenty or thirty percent or whatever higher than they were originally. Then we being gullible like we are take the explanation that everything goes higher because of whatever those poor oil companies, like Exxon Mobil, tell us is the cost of doing business and we are so relieved that the gas prices didn't stay at $2.75 a gallon it went back down to $2.50 a gallon. This time they won't stay at $4.25 a gallon and we will be so happy we are only paying $3.99 a gallon and they will go on their merry way and report another $11 billion dollars profit the next quarter, and selling out of the reserves or drilling off shore will not help us that much but it will give them more fuel to sell us at $4.00 a gallon. When will Congress quit going through the motions of investigating price gouging and actually do something about it. Because those investigations have been coming and going everytime one of these price increases comes along and companies like Exxon Mobil are still having record profits.
                Excuse me,
                Please before we digress any further keep in mind that there is a difference between being Muslim and being a radical Islamic Fundamentalist. The Koran and the Bible are strikingly similar and they both have good morals. They also both have those that pervert the essence of the faith.
                Also, keep in mind that there are those that hate Americans just because we are Americans. This includes many other states that are not necessarily Muslim.
                I am not Muslim, but my wife is. She survived a genocide in Bosnia in the 1990's and quite frankly likes America. America was ,in great part, responsible for the end of the genocide and for bringing an end (or facsimile thereof) to religious persecution there.
                When debating something that ties into religion, history, industrialization I hope sincerely that we all look beyond political alignment and realize that campaigning is campaigning; however the real issues persist. Look to history of not just our country but the world, opinions of us from the world, industrialization of the world. Think bigger, for we can be supporters of either camp and still work together. We must work together. If anyone has doubts about getting off oil, look up the Tesla. There were many who said we would not make it to the moon.
                There is one thing we cannot deny though, and that is historically, polarization and money leads to corruption and greed. Lets try to hold our candidates accountable for working together in whatever is right for the citizens of the country..our country.
                Respectfully,
                Derek Clayton
                  Not only has this candidate wasted his entire life by misusing his education on learning Marxist theory but his Muslim influence is more in question than ever....Does anyone he knows know how to make money in an honest forthright manor and not have to resort to parsing words, misstating economic values or simply not knowing about capitalism? The more this Messaihninc Wonder rambles about spouting this lefty nonsense about his idea of economics the more time, gas and oil he waste and therefore contradicts all that wonderful idealistic conservation advise he wants us to follow. Is not leadership by example needed here, would not a vow of poverty for him and his followers be more suitable for those wanting a low quality of life..Such a shallow protected twit this man must be.
                  The reason that Exxon-Mobil is making so much money is because of Ronald Regan. He deregulated oil. There was a law on the books that said if a barrel of oil went up. The price of gas couldn't go up for THREE months because it too that long before that barrel hit US shores.
                  Look at the price if Oil and count three months then look at Exxon profit. Blame the Whole Government for ripping you off.
                  Releasing the reserves will do nothing for the price of gasoline. I think people are mixing gasoline and oil in the same breath. Even though one makes the other the capacity of making gasoline in this country in the problem not the oil. It has been 30 years since the last refinery has come on-line in this country.
                        If this is an example of the best leadership this country can muster, we are in very serious trouble. The energy problem in this country has existed for a long time ( Check out the headlines in the early 70's ) We the people of the United States have a solumn obligation to all do our part to solve our nations problems. Please, some one give me a good example of some problem that was really solved by our government. There is no one single answer to this problem. Making gas cheaper for us to just waste away by uneconomical driving habits and lack of concern gets us no where. Maybe some leadership with the intestinal fortitude to suggest some of the unpopular conservation measures would help. The simple fact is that if you can afford to pay the price for what ever it is, than your attitude is very likely
                        going to be ( It's not my problem ). We need to find the leaders in this country who are ready to bite the bullet and change things no matter how unpopular. If big money can buy you, than you're not what we need. We need leaders who are only interested in what is good for this country as a whole, not what some special interest wants to line their pockets. Lets find them and get them into government where they need to be.
                        you've got a point here. the government may not be able to fix this just like they haven't been able to in the past. the problem won't really be solved until the companies who drive the energy sector find it profitable to change.
                            He says this now but if it were going to happen the democrats would have allowed for a vote. Why don't they? Because 1) Obama would have to vote no (Pelosi said she wants to save the world). And 2) there are enough votes for it to pass. So Congress went on summer vacation for five weeks and did nothing for you and me. China is drilling off the Cuban shore and to say Florida won't support it is less than 20 miles differences where we would and should be. This is pandering for votes, flip flop and I do not believe Obama at all. Again.
                            Hey.
                            It's THE POLITICS OF CHANGE!
                            And THE AUDACITY OF HOPE!
                            Obama is willing to blatantly and AUDACIOUSLY CHANGE his mind on any defining POLITICAL issue in the spectrum in the AUDACIOUS HOPE he will get elected. And the Junior Senator HOPES the American People are too AUDACIOUSLY stupid to see through the transparent pandering and flip-flopping!
                            Am I being too audacious to frame it this way?
                            Your use of CAPITAL letters is EXTREMELY COMPELLING. It almost sounds makes you sound like you aren't a complete tool. Since when is a compromise synonymous with flip flopping? Lay off the man for crossing party lines to come up with a non-partisan resolution to this very politically charged problem.
                                Somehow?
                                I understood what you're trying to say. Somehow. LOL!
                                Here's the short answer and unfortunately it's a cut and paste of something I wrote here earlier. It's pretty basic. So you might get it if you don't get too aggravated and blinded by the CAPS, TOOL!
                                Hear it is.
                                Ready?
                                There is a difference between changing your mind due to shifting realities and figuring out a better way to do things, as opposed to changing your mind to pander for votes on HUGE defining issues.
                                Obama has shifted on his defining issue - Iraq. And it's a WHOPPING SHIFT on a WHOPPING SUBJECT!
                                That's why he's called a flip-flopper and that's why it sticks!
                                Now he's flipped on another WHOPPING SUBJECT that his base is particularly sensitive to. DRILLING.
                                McCain has done no such thing - shift on a huge defining issue. That's why flip flopping hasn't stuck. If one day McCain shifted to unconditional withdrawal from Iraq? YOU would be correct in saying he's a flip-flopper. McCain won't though. Because he's not a flip flopper! He's been around long enough to have researched and have thoughts about these things.
                                Get it?
                                There's a difference between FLIP-FLOPPING and COMPROMISE. Use the noggin and catch a clue as to their distinctions!
                                    I'm not sure about which WHOPPING SHIFT your talking about, enlighten me. Obama wants to take our troops out of Iraq at the earliest rational time. This is a fact that has never changed. The course of a war can shift at any time, and thus the timetable for withdrawl may also call for adjustment. I know this concept is a little above your head, but bear with me here.
                                    McCain's idea of a solution to the energy crises is a cash prize for a new battery run car. While a science fair is a noble idea, I like Obama's plan a bit better, even if it means compromising a bit on offshore drilling.
                                    He hasn't flipped because he still backs all of his own policies. He has just expanded them a bit in order to narrow the gap between the two party platforms.
                                      Totally not true.
                                      In fact it was OBAMA'S BASE that made him flip back to an unconditional 16-mo. withdrawal. Albeit some of that is lip service really. But that's politics and I don't have the time to explain this nuance to you.
                                      But ...
                                      This one's hard.
                                      Because YOU would have needed to keep up with this national conversation and news to follow. Which evidently you didn't.
                                      Obama's views HAVE shifted.
                                      Hit the web and do some homework and see if there's anything (anything) there. Research the how moveon.org got involved.
                                                That takes balls, and Pelosi probably has the biggest balls of all.
                                                Actually the democratic leaders in the Senate prevented a vote on a very good and comprehensive energy bill. I t was referred to as the"ALL of The ABOVE," bill. It would have provided for near intermediate and long term solutions to our energy problems, but as I said, the Senate Democratic leadership prevented it from coming to a vote.
                                                Does the proverbial clown know as Barack Obama know where in the hell he stands on ANY issue? The Socialist Party's candidate, Barack Obama, exceeds all established standards for hypocrisy. Whether thru sheer inept ignorance or carefully calculated political deception, Obama is a dangerous demagogue; and, his rhetoric simply confirms that with the current composition of the U.S. Senate, our Nation doesn't stand a prayer of extricating ourselves from this self imposed Energy Crisis. Simply review the recent Senate action on HR 3121 where Harry Reid and his minions such as Obama, in sync with the Left-Wing Fringe Elements in our society, voted AGAINST the opening of a miniscule portion of ANWAR; AGAINST shale oil extraction of which America has the equivalent of ten Saudi Arabia's in recoverable reserves; and, AGAINST accelerated efforts to facilitate the gasification of America's abundant reserves of coal. Is there any wonder that Obama's handlers have adamantly refused to allow Obama to appear at a "Town Hall" style debate without the aid of his teleprompter? Obama's long-term subversive associations, and his immersion in seditious anti-American diatribe have indeed revealed Obama as the real-life Manchurian Candidate who should not be allowed anywhere near the Oval Office.                                                 Neubeck - Just so you know, McCain has been a consistent voter against opening Anwar. So I gues that makes him a Left-Wing Finge Element, socialist, dangerous demagogue. By the way, there were never any teleprompters at any of the 20 plus Democratic debates and there will not be any at the three debates scheduled for this fall. Your noxious ranting really adds nothing to the conversation.
                                                  Sorry, I see a lot of passion and rhetoric but no thorough analysis. Don't proselytize without hard facts. In business we call this Metrics. Drilling FL will only provide enough oil for 6 months. Obama knows this and McMaster Cane knows this. Put yourself in the position of another country that wants to destroy the US. They know they have what we need to fight a war. What logical step would you take. Burn up all the oil and have a party.
                                                  Obama and Migrain are no longer pandering to us but to those not intelligent enough to realize it is just pandering. If people did more research than just listening to party politics or our wonderful news media we wouldn't need this pandering.
                                                    So your idea of thorough analysis is bashing McCain instead of Obama. Gee, how now brown cow?
                                                    Here is my conclusion from this short article, that yet again highlights a change in Obama's ideals:
                                                    I'm not voting for Obama!
                                                    1) Gas prices are already dropping due to several factors. I'm not sure that the weather will continue to cooperate until after October, if all American's will try to save fuel and other sources of energy, if the UAE will continue releasing the same amount of oil, or if Congress and the American public will quickly forget to push for new alternatives. (On another rant, electric cars just use fossil fuels to make the electricity.) Gas prices are dropping, so no need to artificially attempt to drive them down.
                                                    2) Selling oil from our reserves = less reserves = bad juju when we have a real crisis. What happens when UAE quit selling to us? Or Columbia? Venezuela?
                                                    3) Obama wants to "compromise" on offshore drilling, in other words he's changing his mind again. You can't be an environmentalist and not an environmentalist at the same time. If you are truly wanting new methods...get with T Boone Pickens on ideas, Mr Obama! or I know go to a local library or send one of your many flunkies to come up with an alternative plan to suggest. I am so sick of hearing "McCain just wants to do blah blah, but I am going to do the exact same thing, but I'm going to pretend I'm not and complain until your ears bleed because I'm the candidate of falseness, hopelessness, socialism, lack of experience, and pure ignorance."
                                                    It's interesting that there is no discussion touting the strategic advantages of pumping the Middle East dry of oil while preserving our own reserves. Such an accomplishment would negate our need for a presence in the Middle East. Indeed, it will take many years to re-tool the nations infrastructure to accommodate alternative fuels and to bring nuclear plants on-line. Many cities in this country are not laid out in such a way as to benefit from mass-transit, light rail systems, etc. However, incentives for companies to implement tele-commuting and 4-day work weeks, plus initiatives to eliminate Saturday mail delivery and the busing of school children would certainly increase the supply of gasoline by appreciable amounts.
                                                        remember McCain said we were offtrack on oil for 30 years... he is basically saying he has been offtrack for 26! So can we really afford another 4 years from him? I agree that Obama is bringing a lot of "hope" and perhaps many people think he is overpromising and will underdeliver. But don't great things happen when we "dream big"? Walking on the moon - at that time people prob think it was rubbish. Overcoming slavery - people would laugh at the thought of it. Obama is right - if we can't do like what our previous generations did in american history of making huge changes then we will not go very far in the future. McCain wont lead us there and he will have no negative ads to attack obama on the debates.
                                                        Ugh, changes in fuels are going to occur with or without Obama. I think better changes will come if Obama goes back to Illinios and stays out of the White House. He's just going to team up with Pelosi. Both are only interested in their own agendas. At the very least McCain has been fairly moderate in the past. He certainly is not my first choice, but I know he will be a patriotic and loyal president.
                                                        Obama's about face. Well, no real surprise about that, is there? He's back-pedalled on everything else. But isn't this coming a little too late? I mean, there are probably places like California where gas is still over $4 a gallon, but on the average, the price has come down nationwide. The time to tap the strategic reserves was three months ago when the price of oil was still going up, when McCain first proposed it, not now when it's started coming down. Clearly just the threat of expanding offshore drilling, by the President, of course, has stopped at least some of the speculating going on and caused the price or oil to drop. Now it's time for Congress to put up. It's time for them to remove the ridiculous restrictions they and the Carter administration imposed. But of course, they're not going to do that. They're getting too much mileage out of blaming"big oil" and telling people to write to their congressman to thank them for "standing up to big oil".
But then again he has the support of Ben Afflect and Matt Damon, thats surely enough for me to be persuaded to vote for him, what a joke. Wake up America!!!
                                                          Yep, I heard pretty much the same lines from people talking about Gore... and then about Kerry. As a result, look what we've had for eight years. I can't see what the problem is. You guys voted that idiot into the White House, how could Obama possibly be any worse?!
                                                          (and for the record I am not an Obama supporter, I just know the lesser of two evils when I see it)
                                                              It was the same democrats ten years ago who voted against off shore drilling because it would take ten years for results. So here we are, ten years later being told the same old story. Just wait until the Saudis join the freak in Iran and start selling it's oil in Euros. You can save money on toilet paper purchases and use your US dollar to wipe you ass with as it will be cheaper to use. *none of which look like Obama so no fear of being called a racist*.
                                                              RIGGGHHHHTTT. The Democrats went on vacation before dealing with the energy crisis, proving that they only care about themselves and not the little people they are supposed to represent (who can't afford to go on vacation due to high energy costs)
                                                              The only constant in the Democrat change is to increase taxes; proof: raise the gas tax 40% to 60% at a time that we are already suffering from the oil barons at the pump.
                                                              Pandering for Votes, BArack H Obama now wants to reduce the price of gasoline (It's already fallen 40 cents a gallon here in Tennessee), thus jumping on the train after it left the station. A short term gimmick, just like the gas tax holiday he denounced; what AUDACITY. Does he think we are stupid; talking down to everyone, not just the Blacks as Jesse Jackson said. A long term solution is what we need, a comprehensive plan that INCLUDES DRILLING in off limits places as well as alternative fuels.
                                                              electric cars are the answer?? wait, where does the electricity come from? oil fired generators; trying to trick us again.
                                                              Hey Folks, I got this one figured out for sure. It isnt that Obama is Black, it isnt that he is less than a one term senator, it isnt that he talks a good line of crap. Factually speaking, Obama has a genetic fault called, "His head is not in the anatomically correct location". That explains all the crap he has been spouting and where it came from.
